I first read this when it came out. I was ten and a massive James Bond/The Saint fan, being British of course! Me included. However, I was immediately struck by the, then unheard-of retaliatory strike against the machinations of the Mafia. Nowadays this would be rather passé as time changes all cultures and our expectations. A Vietnam veteran, (pre-Rambo) single-handedly takes on one of the most powerful organisations in the world and beats them! Totally unbelievable but an absolutely fantastic read, especially for a young boy seeking a powerful male role model. Even today, on rereading it still stands up despite the passage of time. Don Pendleton really created something special here, especially with the addition of the Gold Eagle Books franchise deal and numerous spinoff series. There are now almost 1200 titles and rumoured plans for a movie. War Against the Mafia would make the perfect opener! Just so long as Hollywood doesn't update it in their reboot mode.
