Doomsday Disciples

Second consecutive book that I didn't really enjoy. I knew from reading the plot description that it'd probably not be one of my favorites. A former Vietnamese soldier -- from the war -- becomes a religious leader, brainwashes a congregation, solicits KGB help, and then captures a senator's daughter. Then, of course, after Mack saves the girl, she manages to get herself re-captured alongside her father. After Mack saved her so early in the story, there was no doubt in my mind this is how it'd all play out. The action sequences were just average (at best), and the villainous Minh never really enticed any emotion out of me. Not a favorite...

While the plot is pretty weak, Newton makes this a pretty enjoyable read. I think the one flaw is that the ending doesn't really live up to the hype of the rest of the novel, it kind of falls flat in the end. A bit rushed. I suspect that is due to the page constraints on the early books. An enjoyable read, but a pretty average Bolan title.

Pretty disappointing read here which promised a lot at the start but failed to deliver. The overall plot reading from the start I thought this is going to be pretty good a religious leader who has brainwashed his followers to do his bidding and is setting them up to explode like time bombs in the future. Then the prerequisite female that is being held captive and has to be saved by the Big Guy which is promptly done and she is ushered to a safe house out of the action and can be forgotten while the Big Guy gets on with more important stuff. Oh yeah of course she is then promptly recaptured by the Bad Guys and has to be rescued yet again <sigh> Swap the religious leader for a Capo, swap his "Elders" for cannon fodder gunmen from the Mafia Wars titles and you have the same old tried and tested title which has been done many times before. Nothing new here at all simply wooden ducks being set up which the Big Guy mows down over and over again. Very ordinary title which you would be well advised to stay clear of.

A decent read and decent plot line. One thing that would have made better for me though was since Mack was in the neighbourhood and he was having a few problems with his mission and keeping tabs on the girl, thenwhy didn't he use the services of his Able Team buddies. They were even mentioned as standing by waiting for her to call.

One of the few books in this series I've read more than once, its straight forward action packed , and some good writing, not the best in the series, and not overly original, but a damn entertaining book. A little on the short side too....

This story was all right by mike newton's standards. Unfortunately it was way to short for there to be any real action in the book. The ending was a bit surprising. I have never read a villain that accepted his fate quite like that. A good entry that needs a little work.

I have read around 8 Mack Bolan books so far and this one had some of the coolest action I have yet to read in the Mack Bolan series. The action seemed almost non stop from beginning to end. also, Bolan gets himself into some situations which I had not expected. All in all a wonderful read.

Boy, this book was a huge disappointment. It had a lot of potential but it never made the impact I had hoped for but instead it left me with way too many questions and loose ends. Some of these questions were; How did the "elders" know where to look for Amy Culp in the safehouse? What happened to Amy´s girlfriend from school who was going to help her? Why didn´t we get any insight in the Unversal Devotees cult? What was Nguyen´s big plan? Why was the KGB helping him? What were they supposed to gain from it? The plot was thin and leaked BIG time and only displayed Nguyen Van Minh as a dull and weak cult leader instead a powerful villian but of course the story is weak overall so a powerfull and interesting villian wouldn´t have made much difference here.. Again..............a huge disappoinment (2003)

I read this book during a time when i was reading a bolan novel a day.I wish i had the time these days to do that again! I blew through this romp in about 2 hours, by far the fastest read for me and it was like a thrill ride on a kick butt rollercoaster.Not the best book but i rate it a 9 star because it was a great almost realtime Bolan beatdown.After reading Violent streets, Paramilitary Plot, and this, Mike Newton became my favorite author.At least for a while.

A cult crime wave has the attention of the government and The Executioner has come to San Francisco to disrupt their campaign of terror and stop their charismatic leader. This tale has Bolan acting alone again and it all takes place in the space of six hours one night in San Francisco. The story opens with a soft probe that turns hard in an instant and from there the action never lets up for more than a few pages. Mike Newton really seems to be in touch with the Pendleton magic for action, tension and drama. The bullets fly, cars are wrecked and burned, bad guys topple and things just generally go boom from the beginning to the end of this tightly paced action-packed story. The cult leader is a good villain and he and his underlings gave the big guy a great battle in this book. Mack didn't just walk through this one blasting things apart. He was tasked hard to come out a winner. I can't really say enough about this one. It was almost like reading one of the old Mafia Wars classics. The author even gets into some of the Bolan philosophy and there's a passage from his journal. I can't think of any reason not to award this one 10 stars.

Great Bolan AT ITS STRANGEST. I mean look at that cover it looks cooler than most bolan books. so real, so there, and a good read. InfraRED Death, Hammering down, from the Night!

I found this Bolan to be fun, It was my second or third Bolan related book so it was good. The action at the start I found to be corny but good. Total: 8.5

A DECENT ENTRY IN THE SERIES. NOTHING SPECTACULAR THOUGH.

This falls somewhere in the middle of my scale. A good one, but not spectacular.
