White Hell

I liked white hell. You would think that the IRA would learn there lesson from the last book. Good action here. Liked the chase at the beginning of the book, brutal bastards glad Phoenix took care of them. Liked when Manning made the Igloo during the storm.all in all satisfying entry to the series. 7 stars.

"White Hell" provides a solid story and is a step up from book 5, "Fury Bombs". This is the Phoenix Force that I remember from reading as a teen. An Irish terrorist group -- INLA -- plans to wreak havoc on the US by interrupting the nation's oil supply/production. In the opening scene, PF stops an attempted terrorist attack in Washington state. After the failed attempt, INLA takes on a more significant endeavor in planning to blow up sequences throughout the Alaska pipeline. In countering PF must deal with the covert nature of INLA, the elements of Alaska, and the shortened time for acting. The author wrote some tremendous scenes, maintained some intrigue up to the final scene, and had some interesting dialogue between the PF personnel as these early authors continue to develop the teamwork and synergy of Bolan's five-man team. The author did a great job of this is book #3 as well.

Really enjoyed this book. Awesome cover, too. Definitely a solid PF novel with some great action scenes. The gang were top notch. The only major gripe I had were the villains who I found a bit flat. The woman terrorist was ridiculous and silly, I wasn't really feeling her character at all. But besides that this was a pretty strong entry into the canon.

Classic cover, one of my favorites, and whats inside is pretty decent as well. Not as much action as some others, but I really enjoyed the whole survival aspect of it. A very good read ! Eh Kay says, very good!

Well you would have thought the Irish terrorists of a splinter group of the IRA would have got the message after they had their backsides kicked in the last title but no back they come again. This time their target is the Trans-Alaska pipeline and coupled with Arab interests hope to create a prolonged oil embargo crippling the good old USA by destroying the pipeline. Some good stuff here especially the descriptions of what the weather was doing the difficulties facing the team regarding visibility, communications, extreme cold, weapons freezing etc. During this the team is caught in a unexpected blizzard and are sure to perish BUT........( come on there are another what 50 odd titles coming) so what happens is very good reading well written to get the guys out of that I certainly didn't pick it. The terrorists are ruthless in their endevours let me tell you and a high body count is running. The attack on the location where they are finally traced to is excellent semi-culminating in what happens to the terrorist cell leader (gruesome but I loved it). Hey we are not finished yet but and bring on the lover of the recently departed who has actually recently started to get a bit of a likeing to group sex (I love these Irish Terrorists) and our favourite team get caught with their pants down and have met their end (or have they?). I loved it and hope you do if you decide to read it. One other thing the cover art in this series is stunning this title especially I have looked at it so many times and it is simply fantastic. Recommended reading in this series.

IRA terrorists is Alaska on the Pipeline, go figure. And it is the dead of winter. I can understand why Manning would like this trip but poor Encizo has to suffer and says that he will never do that again, well what did he know what would happen.

This one isn't as good as the first Ramirez book, Atlantic scramble. Compared to Fieldhouse's books, this one just isn't up to par with most of the series. A good read overall. Another great cover by Gil Cohen.

"White Hell" starts off with Phoenix Force already on their mission to thwart an attack on oil shipping facilities by some IRA terrorist loonies. The book opens with a persuit of the bad guys on I-5 in Seattle that ends in firey destruction. Zip to Alaska because the rest of the IRA must be planning to attack the pipeline. The remainder of the book is Phoenix looking for the terrorists until they can find them and wipe them out for the final chapters. There's one more engagement with a terrorist scouting party during the search along the pipeline that doesn't really seem very exciting. The action at the end is good but not great. The guys of Phoenix Force are OK here. No false notes. The villains are adequate but not memorable except for the woman terrorist who is just too outrageous and melodramatic to be believable. Anyway, the terrorists provide lots of reasons to hate them and they all die as expected. One note about armaments. In the story Manning uses a Dragon anti-tank weapon but on the cover he is carrying a 90mm recoilless rifle, commonly called a "drain pipe" by the grunts of my generation. This one gets 5 stars. It would have rated 6 stars except for the bit near the end when 4 of Phoenix Force seem to have some kind of temporary stupidity and stand around gawking in the midst of the area of operations so the terrorists can get the drop on them. Really out of character and seemed like a contrivance to allow that woman terrorist to have a mad speech before her bloody end.

This had some good action scenes, but the overall book was just okay.
