The majority of this novel takes place in Venice, allowing for an interesting experience for Bolan as he performs this mission in the canals of this city. Near the end he moves on to Romania, but almost all the story is in Venice. Fans of Leo Turrin will love this book, as he works with Bolan for the whole adventure.
Bolan’s plan to rescue a boy held hostage turns out to be much more complicated than first thought. Odom weaves a complex backstory to the mafia families involved with the boys relatives, throw in the Romanian villain to add to the Galvani badguy for two main villains in this book. But another enigmatic side character, a priest, is added for another interesting seasoning in what turns out to be an entertaining and unique storyline. I liked how the author tied up the priest part at the end of the book, which made another positive aspect to this novel.
The action is fairly standard, the body count rises as the book goes along, and Bolan uses the weapon shown on the cover of #60 Sold for Slaughter along with many grenades guns and vehicles, both boats and cars. This would make a good movie, plenty of room in here for action, dialogue, characters and story development. Definitely one of the Bolan adventures worth reading.
Well firstly this is an excellent read where you will enjoy a fine deep plotline some excellent characters and in the second half some terrific action scenes which will certainly keep you entertained.
Unfortunately setting up a title like this involves a lot of introduction of characters and plot lines by the author hence some descriptive reading and unfortunately I also thought there was a few times at the start where you think to yourself when reading okay get on with it for goodness sake.
I actually loved the introduction of the Priest character and his inclusion in some of the action scenes but was also annoyed as the author never allowed the reader to know of his previous life. Sure he is/was a killer and is exceptionally good at his trade but umm what did he bloody well do before?
Leo shines here let me tell you where I may be a little biased as he is one of my favourite characters if you like this character then this is the tile for you.
The story is Mafia based and features many fine sections leading up to the final third of the title which will blow you away.
Very enjoyable story and highly recommended.
It was okay. I liked the dialogue between the characters, but things were somewhat slow in parts as well as some of the action scenes (Bolan defending the house, and the ensuing boat chase through the city of Venice). I just wish it had been more direct; the author seemed to draw nonessential things out too much.
I enjoyed this one as well. While it was a bit slow at first and confusing at times, the overall mystery and intrigue of the story was presented very well. I liked the way that, just when you think you know what is going on, something new happened that totally threw you off. A good story.
This book surprisingly worked best when Bolan was not around.
The scenes with Leo Turrin were fantastic especially the scenes with Julia DiVenzenco. I especially loved the two scenes when he faced down Galvano. I would have liked this if it would have been Leo alone for the first half then bring in Mack.
The priest. This book could have done without him. Yes he had one touching scene where he shared a meal with a young teen girl. But I was not sure what he was before he became a priest. There were hints but they never panned out. This guy was a killing machine almost as good as Mack. Yet we learned almost nothing. Dump Lupu and use him more would have been better. Lupu was really just your typical overcomfident thug who wanted more then he could handle. We learned too much I thought of Lupu stuff that could have been reduced to a paragraph.
This book had a lot of potential but it never came together. The priest had the most potential. Also I got kind of lost in that action scene at the end between Fr Light and Bolan against Lupu and Galvano.
Not a very good Odom novel except for the Turrin scenes. Those were well written and done. If you are a big Leo fan then this would be a must read.
I pretty much enjoyed this outing. The action scenes in and around Venice and it's waterways was a big plus. I didn't really think the book took off until about half-way through. And I found a papal assassin to be a tad unconvincing--even though the character himself was good.
A very decent Bolan outing. I always enjoy mafia stories. The papal assassin was a nice addition to the story, it made more interesting.
An excellent book in my opinion...filled with mystery and plenty of action, one of my favorites from Mel Odom.
Despite the good cover this book is a real lemon. If someone else wrote it, it would of been a real good and maybe even classic in the tales of Bolan. This book is like an extension of the earlier career of Mack where he fights the MOB.
