Rolling Death

This is another drug king takedown story, this time in the Miami area where the whole adventure takes place. Grimaldi is Bolan's sidekick for this mission. Not too much new here, there were a few parts that held my interest in the story enough to keep the pages turning, but overall this is average stuff. A few different factions working together, including a biker gang, make Bolan's adversary in Florida, leading up to a grand finale on the highway leading out of Miami. Bolan's assault using a van that acted as a simplified version of the war wagon he used a couple times before, make it more interesting. Here we have a convoy on the freeway as the ending instead of the usual compound style scenes, which was a good change. Grimaldi added destructive air support as usual. There are predictable formulas that the author uses in his books, and these again show up here, but there was enough going on to keep this book from being a disappointment. Many other better reads in the series than this, but if you are a fan of Schmidt, you should like it.

Well another Dan Schmidt title. Okay I slated his trilogy recently this must be better? Well it is a Mafia story so it is in front from the start anyway. Hey it is great right from the opening page you will be into the plot/storyline and let me say this has been done many many times but I thoroughly enjoyed the story line leading up to the convoy of semi's leaving. I'm thinking if the author had been allowed to release this title as a Super Bolan he would have been able to finish it properly but to me it seemed to be compressed in the final 50 or so pages. Yes massive body count at the end but the storyline/plot has set it up. I enjoyed it and hope you will. Recommended reading.

I read all the negative reviews for this book, but I thought it was great. Bolan and Grimaldi make a good team and Grimaldi fighting on land worked for me. Bolan needed the help and Grimaldi is there. Tartaglia is a good opponent. Dan Schmidt has a tough, hardball style of writing, that holds my interest. Rolling Death is one of my favorite Bolan books.

This book had possibilities, too bad they weren't explored. Just another run of the mill Bolan drug hit. My big beef with this book is it's continuity in the series. Tartaglia is portrayed as a reigning 20yr drug kingpin of Miami. In 20yrs the Executioner never went after him before, even during the mafia wars? There have been worse, but there definitely has been better also.

Another book in a short span that just was not that good. I hope that there is no one out there trying to figure out what is so great about the series and picks this one up as a first or second book to read. With a few exceptions in some of the action scenes, this book did not seem to have what it needed (and I am not sure exactly what could have helped it).

Yawn. Bolan attacks Mafia goons with a war wagon. Gets airstrike support from Grimaldi. Oh Dear, the DEA is arresting Grimaldi. Like Kurtzman can arrange an assault van and an attack helicopter, but can't let Jack know about the surveillance on a simple warehouse? Lots of explosions. Lots of shooting. Zero tension. Zero excitement. Zero worry for Mack or Jack. Zero tolerance for this piece of Dan Schmidt.

I really wanted to like this book. As some of you already know, I'm a big fan of Mafia plotlines, and Rolling Death held the promise of being something by David North I could cheer about. Add to that fact that it's set in my home state of Florida, and the book already gained two notches of approval. However, that's not the case. The book starts out promising: Bolan targeting on a Mafia don, intending to scare the living daylights on him in classic Executioner style. However, the implication that I gathered was that Bolan's only source of information on the Mafia was through Hal and the DEA, and that was his sole reason for targeting the Mafia. Excuse me? There are typographical errors scattered throughout (on p. 150, Bolan isn't capitalized; earlier, War Room is needlessly capitalized for the context it's used in). Now, I'm not immune to a few typos occasionally, but it's a far different thing for me to have that than in a published novel. On top of that, Grimaldi is (for 80% of the novel) is a grunt and not a pilot. I'm not saying that Grimaldi can't fight, it's just the way he's portrayed in here that bothers me. It's not until page 147 that he gets a helicopter, and the chopper sounds suspiciously like the old Dragon Slayer, just updated and renamed Predator. Then, just a few short pages later, we get a new War Wagon. Sorry, but a new War Wagon was the last thing I wanted to see brought back. It makes no sense, IMO, to have a War Wagon for today's Bolan, not when he has the full support of Stony Man. I get the definite impression that David North thinks that Stony Man has a full-time staff of engineers at its beck and call. What does he think this place is, a CIA operation? If so, I have something to tell him: No way, Jose. I haven't even begun to describe how throughly confused I am by the addition of the bikers into the plot. I feel like I'm plowing through this thing, and more to the point, I feel like someone threw in references to old stuff just to be throwing in the stuff.
