To the unwary, Red Star is a small mining complex near the Arizona-Mexico border. But Mack Bolan sees the camp for what it really is - a firebase and a launch point for illegal arms and drugs into the U.S. The enemy: former Spetsnaz commandos. Using the killer squads of muscle, a Russian sleeper network is plotting with a Mexican crime lord to tunnel death right into America's backyard. It's a man and a woman against an army in the burning desert, with little food, water or weapons. The odds are bad and getting worse with the enemy willing to track Bolan to hell itself. But the Executioner plans to get there first. . . to welcome them personally.

I Started reading Executioners and Super Bolans when I was a teenager almost 30 years ago! I kind of faded away in my mid twenties, but now I'm back! This was the first Executioner that I got back into and what a title! I really enjoyed this book! It instantly reminded me of those I had read in my teens and early twenties. I like the fast pace of Death Whisper. I love how we are forwarded into action right away and it never really lets up. however that is not to say that it is over-exhausting! I give it nine stars because it is such a good book, especially the end with Able and Phoenix teams as well as Jack in the Apache Gunship! However I deducted one star for the lack of explanation about Larquette's change up of wardrobe that all the Mexicans drooled over. but once they returned to the U.S. there was no mention of a change in wardrobe, but no one seemed to care. What's with that? I know it's minor, but it bugged me. All in all, it was an enjoyable and fun book to read! I would highly recommend it!

Chuck Rogers started his tenure as one of the new breed of Bolan scribes with this book and it really shows why he is considered one of the best right out of the gate. This book fired on all cylinders and comes off as a near perfect example of what an Executioner novel could and should be. Great villains, a likable and capable supporting cast, just the right amount Stony Man support, and great action from cover to cover. Even the by-now ubiquitous nuke threat was well played and thought out. After the lackluster showing of some of the series entries in the early 200's this volume is truly a breath of fresh air. N' I have to mention...boy, it really doesn't pay to be an old friend of Hal Brognola does it? They don't seem to have the best of luck in the old age category!

I believe this is Chuck Rogers first entry in the series and he sets a standard that is equaled by a only a handful of the other writers (nearly ALL of his books are in the top 100 on this website alone!) As soon as I read this one, I hit a second hand book site and ordered every other title that this man has written, very glad I did! Starting with this title, he creates Bolan with a lot more personality and HUMAN interaction with other characters. From incredible fire fights (and I LOVE an author that does not feel the need to explain EVERY acronym, y'all should know the equipment by now!) to moments of Bolan trying to survive against overwhelming odds, using limited equipment and vicious terrain whilst protecting a civilian (and we all know how much Bolan LOVES that). PLUS Phoenix comes along for the ride WITH Grimaldi YES! Great plot, great action and interaction (AND characters that will recur in later books. Highly recommended start to the Chuck Rogers/Mack Bolan universe.

Lame, lame, lame……………….or for most part lame!!!! The book started out in an explosive way with Soviet hit team trying to take Bolan out for no real reason at first though that changes as the book progresses. Sounds interesting??? Yes, but sadly not from my point of view and I hate to admit I really didn´t dig this book in general. After the praise other readers have been giving the book it is a very overrated one in my mind. It dragged a lot during certain parts with endless pages of survival of the fittest in the Arizona mountains making me loose my interest time and time again and in the end I was really very happy the book was finished so that I could turn my attention to another and hopefully a better book. The real plot of the book was never quite made into any details and questions like these kept on haunting me; “Why all this set up? Why was this called a “firebase”? What was there to be smuggle between the US and Mexico? What was the Tyler´s end game? Where did they get all money to back us this huge operation? I would have preferred some one on one between Bolan and Baibakov giant and more personal showdown instead of that flat old western shootout in the end. I think that both the author and the character were muddling around with too much smoke to cloud their vision to make this book a memorable one. (Iceland – 2007)

Brilliant, superb, terrific, fantastic....... You probably guess I loved this. This is in the top five books of the 300 plus I have read of the combined series. From start to finish this book will entertain and amaze you and keep you turning the pages to find out what is going to happen. The inclusion of Able Team and some of Phoenix Force leads the book to a classic ending. Highly Highly recommended reading.

One of the better Chuck Rogers books from this era. From the opening sequence of Bolan getting ambushed, to the final violent battle, this one rocked. This had a Old West quality to it that I liked. The town being taken over, and no one wants to stand up to their tyranny. Except Bolan and a plucky town sheriff. Their trek across the desert, and Bolan's sniper mission further solidified things. Having Most of Phoenix and Able coming in at the end to blast apart the Russian operation, with Grimaldi as air support put an extreme exclamation point on this kick-ass book.

It was good. It was very good. But I didn’t think that it was as good as Savage Game. It has a lot of excellent Bolan elements in it, including impossible sniping shots, the Executioner’s ability to take on large groups of enemy special forces almost single handedly and plenty of desert survival skills. This book has it all and lots of explosions to boot. Yet Chuck Rogers manages to disappoint the reader in one or two places, the main one being the Bolan – Baibakov confrontation…… or lack there of. Ignore the fact that Baibakov would return in Blood Circle in X years time and look at what happened. Throughout the story The seven foot former Spetnaz soldier pursues Bolan, only to be constantly outwitted. The anger builds and we truly believe that there will come a time when Bolan and Baibakov will duke it out. We know that this is inevitable. Until Jack Grimaldi blows Baibakov up using rockets from an Apache helicopter gunship. This is such a disappointing ending to such a mean spirited henchman, and such a let down. We know that Baibakov does make a comeback in book 127, and maybe the two men do come face to face then, but for this story it is a major let down. The other disappointment, or to be correct loose end, is the villains plot. Anne Tyler and her husband are already extremely wealthy and powerful, but for some reason they have a tunnel dug between Arizona and Mexico to smuggle what? Drugs? Weapons? (the cover of the book states ‘arms ring’ but this is not in the book itself), illegal immigrants? All of the above? The real question is why would they want to do this? It is not really explained and the thread dangles before this reader’s eyes. But the good points far outweigh the minor let downs. I throughly enjoyed the Bolan adventure – which starts as a personal mission taken on behalve of Brognola and ends with a combined Bolan – Able Team – Phoenix Force assault on the enemy’s main base – and I am now wondering how I am going to get my hands on Blood Circle to see how the story continues.

This book has the whole package. A nifty title, another great cover by Herring, and one of the best Bolan adventures I have read in a while. I have finally entered Mr. Rogers' neighborhood and found out how entertaining a writer he is. This book is wall to wall full throttle action and excitement from the first chapter to the final pages. A Russian spetznaz group has set up an underground pipeline linking the US to Mexico. The death of the police chief of the nearby town brings in his daughter Pattie to replace him, along with Mack Bolan to investigate. Bolan and Pattie make a fine team through most of the book, and when she is too injured to continue, the likes of Grimaldi, Able Team, McCarter, Encizo, and Manning join in for the final battle. The Apache helicopter attack was awesome. I liked the evil villains in this story especialy the badass Baibokov character, a seven foot tall spetsnaz soldier, who is one of the main villains focused on in this novel. This guy returns later in #227 Blood Circle. I liked the frustration of his failing again and again to kill Mack. The only minor nitpick I had was the improper grammar use "off of", but otherwise an almost flawless Executioner entry. From firefights in the town of Crucible, to the chase into the desert, trapped in a underground mine, the infiltration of the hacienda in Mexico, and the final battles in the tunnel and the Arizona base, this is an awesome Bolan adventure no fan of this series should miss out on. Get it and read it!

This was by far one of the best Mack Bolan books I have ever read. I loved the female lead, the main bad guy, the appearance of the other Stony Man soldiers, and the premise. I highly reccomend this to anyone, whether they read Mack Bolan or not.

Excellent book!!! The development of the spetsnaz characters as honorable opponents was truly original. Also, the scene with the apache helicopter is incredible. I also liked the way Laroquette didn't just play the role as Bolan's tag-along. The appearance of AT/PF was also a welcome addition, as this has been the first Executioner book I had read with them in it. So far, out of the dozen or so Execs that I have read, this one rates a perfect 10.
