Firebase Florida

Well pretty good book. I must admit I found the start slow but after the first 100 pages or so the book picks up. I struggled with the plot as I was constantly wondering why Mack would do what he is doing. I thought the title was too close to one of the original titles and should have been renamed. my two bobs worth.............

An excellent solid action book from cover to cover. The story takes place in the areas of Miami, Lauderdale, in nearby swamps, on the sea, and even in Cuba. Bolan has good allies in a group of cubans who are fighting against local gangsters, and eventualy the communist cuban DGI is involved. Bolan blitzes both of these enemies in great action scenes, and gains another ally with the boat captain named Rodriguez. I liked the adventures on board his boat, which makes up a good portion of the novel. The girl Ramona was another great ally, her part was written very well. Pretty much everything was written well, Bolan's characterization, the storyline, villains, action scenes and the pacing was perfect. The attack on the swamp hideout was a tragic heartwrenching part of the story, and brought out the focus on the surviving Alvorado as another tough ally for Bolan. One of the author's best entrys in the series.

I really liked this novel. I liked the small touches. 1) Cubans in this series do love Mack Bolan. How many times have we seen Mack and the Cubans get along perfectly and act like brothers. I guess it goes back to book 4. A legend in the Cuban community seemed to have taken root. Although in this novel they didn't know him by name - odd although it could be they knew but didn't want to admit it. 2) The plot was a bit confusing at times with all the backstabbing by the pro-Castro Cubans. I liked the scene in the race track kind of cute. 3) I liked also how Mack made a mistake not realizing his friends compound would be hit. The girl was seen as being fairly careless with vehicles. She reminded me a lot of Mack's female friend in books 4 and later on when Mack meets her sister. 4) The marksman medal was such a nice touch in the novel. Got the bad guys running. Did a wise thing not taking Cuerzo out at that time instead bring disarray to the villians. 5) The boat chase scene between Miami and Cuba was good although I did have to backtrack a paragraph to figure out how Mack got on the boat. Overall a 7.

Bolan heads to South Florida. There he meets up with a rag-tag team of Cuban exiles who are fighting the equivalent of the Cuban mob. Bolan joins forces to throw off their oppressors. The plot was similar to a hundred other Bolan books, but somehow made fresh by the little twist of the cubanos plight. And while it proved the old adage about never wanting to be the sidekick of a hero, the writing was original enough to sustain interest. Little things were annoying with this book -- the way Bolan was treated as a messiah by the cubanos, the way Bolan risks life and limb sneaking into a fortress only to decide to leave a Marksman medal, the way Bolan fires on a boat but then wants to save the victims from drowning -- but the intangibles make this a good read and worth the time.

Firebase Florida is an action packed one without any real mystery or enigma for Bolan to find out. The enemy is very visible so the only question is; how will Bolan shut him down once and for all?? This is yet another great book by Carl Furst and I wish he would write another one soon!!!
