This is book one of a duology, making it a different experience than the books I read in the series up to now. Instead of wrapping everything up with Ryan and his crew at the end of the book in triumph over the Baron of the week, we are instead left with the gang captured and in a bad situation. The bleak and gritty post-nuke world is depicted very well as usual, this time on the coastline of Texas. A companion at the first battle scene joins Ryan's crew, and leads them to the second act of the story, a grounded freighter on an island. Here is where the pirates are introduced and things get very intense for the gang in some of the most brutal experiences yet in their adventures. The pirate's unique plot to weaken their impending victims with sending a plague trojan horse into the town is ingenious and frightening. A solid episode in this series, but only half of the whole story. I was left wanting to immediately start on the conclusion to see how Ryan and his crew can get out of their predicament.
