Surprisingly still a topical story, even tho it was written 20 years ago. Not much has changed in Myanmar to date the novel. Stony Man are brought into an advneture that at first sight is quite low level, but quickly develops into the rogue government of Myanmar getting their hands on 1950's hydrogen bombs. Phoenix Force are sent to Thailand and Myanmar, with Able Team first running around the States before going to Myanmar to wrap the adventure up. It wasn't a far fetched story and in its way quite enjoyable.
However, and this is on me, I found it slow going. I was frequently lost on the names of all the characters, confusing the rebel leaders with the CIA helpers. My fault, not the author. As a result it took me about two weeks to get thro the story.
If there is a fault than it was with the military equipment. The author did not know, and hadn't researched his helicopters. Frequently we would have the entire teams climb into an Apache or the European equivalent of an Apache. Come om, only two people fit in an Apache, not Phoenix Force and Able Team. So this was nonsense. Similar mistakes were made with aircraft as well.
But all in all I liked this story.
This one by Renauld had the makings of a Super-Villian book: where the bad guys take up a lot of chapters, and the Stony Men get one here and there. But, when the plot got going, it settled in. And a very muddled plot it was. The ruling military plans on using nukes and sarin gas on the rebels of Myanmar. But, there's an American traitor in the mix, too...or is he? He has more than a few secrets.
The battles were below average. Able had the better ones over the course of the novel, and the finale was only okay. What bugs me about some of the authors books is when he deals with Asian characters. There's so many of them with their different-sounding names and very difficult to keep track of who's who.
Fair read.
Not really much to say about this title which comes up recently following a couple of crackers in the series and compared to them just wallows.
The Randolph character was quite good with a couple of predictable things occurring to him and the background leading into the ongoing storyline is fair reading as well which keeps the reader interested but overall it is a bit of a plodder.
You could do much better in this series than reading this one.
I tought this one was a very good entry in to the Stony
Man series, my one complaint as stated before, PF gets the most attention, and no Mack, which isnt nesescarily a bad thing considering that he has his own two series of books, I would rather have little or no Mack in a Stony Man book than too much. And what did happen to Randolph?, I did like the way the book builds and builds that Randolph is one of the bad guys then boom he takes revenge on those that the Stony Man forces and AF IA think Randolph is helping! Bien Phyr was an aewsome villan, but his elimination was underdeveloped.
While this wasn't a page turner, it still wasn't a bad book, just so-so.
Phoenix Force seems to get the spot light while Able Team just co- stars, which is not a big deal, but AT was underplayed. Action wasn't bad, but there could of been more of it too.
One thing that struck me as a loose end, was what happened to the triple agent Randolph?
If you are a Stony Man fan, get this book, but I wouldn't say it was a keeper. Ron Renuad has written better books, and will again I am sure.
This was the worst Stony Man book I have ever read. Using an Apache Helicopter to transport Pheonix around? No fucking way. Apaches don't even have cargo space, they are an assault gunship with two damn seats!!!!!!! If you're going to use a Helo with armaments, then use a damn Blackhawk or Huey. Too much bullshit in this one, not enough action. And where the hell has Bolan been these past few books? This is getting gay..........
I just finished reading this book and I have to admit it I liked it. Sure there are some things that yu hve o check up on that happened earlier in he novel. And some of the characters have been under done. But who would have ever gussed that my nickname would end up in the book Other than that it was enjoyable up until the last chapter. Until next time. Arlette "Lette" Pixley.
This book is defreint from any other Stonyman books. It has rutles villan and good story, but falls short on caracter devolpemt. For that reason I give it score of 8.
